Abstract:

Water based paints are most commonly used in surface coatings as protection and decorative reasons and has a wide range of usage area. However in case of fire, they are flammable products. Risk of fire increases with the growing industry and developing technology. To reduce this risk, producing fire resistant materials has become most urgent need in industry. Due to this, fire retardancy of water based paints must be improved. Turkey has the largest boron reserves in the World. But economic benefits of this reserve is fewer than the other countries. Instead of using boron as raw material, special boron products which have many different application areas should be processed. Boric acid with no toxicological and highly prior flame retardancy effect, is a product of boron which started using as flame retardancy. In this study, improving of flame retardancy of water based paints with addition of boric acid is planned. With addition of boric acid on different weight ratios (5%, 10 and 20); the physical properties of water based paint, with LOI analysis flame retardancy of paint, with TGA thermal analysis and with FTIR material analysis of paint has been examinated. Also thermal and flame retardancy effects of addition of CaCO3 and melamine to the paint has been examined. Performed test results show that addition of boric acid with different w/w ratios of 5%, 10 and 20; increased the LOI score of paint from 24 to 30, 33 and over 55 respectively. Also TGA results shows that with the increasing amount of boric acid in the paint compound, weight loss from the structure decreased, whereas melamine and CaCO3 also increase the flame retardancy of paint.
