Abstract:

In this research, the historical evolution and the present situation of the History of Art lessons in Turkish secondary schools, and their comparison to those in some European Union countries have been made. First of all, the definition of History of Art, its evolution process in Turkey and in the world, the inclusion of the History of Art lessons in the secondary education programs in Turkey, as well as the changes it underwent have been stıdied. Regarding this information, by comparing History of Art lessons in secondary education institutions in Turkey and those in some European countries (Germany, France, Italy), a tentative conclusion has been made. During the study, the literature review has been made. Besides, written and oral information have been gathered from the German, French and Italian embassies; from these countries' schools in Turkey; from embassies and schools abroad and finally from the National Education Ministry authorities. Consequently, we can consider that, in Germany, France and Italy, contrary to the situation in Turkey history of art lessons are treated with a method in which the students are active and that the program followed is related to everyday life. Nevertheless, from the difficulties we had to reach education programs in these three countries and fromthe fact that people who have been interviewed were uninformed of the existence of such a lesson, we can conclude that History of Art education may be problematic in European countries as well. Today in Turkey, we don't attach sufficient importance to History of Art lessons. This may be the result of the fact that History of Art lessons are not compulsory and that generations grow without getting this education .
