Abstract:Chlorinated volatile organic compounds are pollutants creating major environmental problem in water. In this study, dynamic behaviour of dichloromethane, 1,2-dichloroethane, chloroform, 1,1,1-trichloroethane and carbon tetrachloride in water was investigated by using the one sided moment technique. As a result of interpretation of zeroth moments analysis of tracers used, reversible adsorption has been observed. Adsorption equilibrium constant and penetration length of tracers were obtained by the first absolute and second central moment expressions derived for pulse – response experiments. Experiments were carried out with tracers in the one – sided adsorption cell at 30 °C. The adsorption equilibrium constants of dichloromethane, 1,2- dichloroethane, chloroform, 1,1,1-trichloroethane and carbon tetrachloride at gas – water interface were evaluated. This study has shown that the adsorption equilibrium constant and penetration length values could be successfully evaluated using the one – sided adsorption cell moment technique. The adsorption equilibrium constant for dichloromethane, 1,2- dichloroethane, chloroform, 1,1,1-trichloroethane and carbon tetrachloride were calculated as 0.255 cm³/cm², 0.3 cm³/cm², 0.73 cm³/cm², 0.49 cm³/cm² and 0.54 cm³/cm², respectively. Penetration lengths for these tracers were found as 0.01 cm, 0.006 cm, 0.01 cm, 0.04 cm and 0.018 cm, respectively.
