Abstract:

INVESTIGATION OF HARMONIC SOURCES AND ACTIVE POWER FILTERS (M.Sc. Thesis) Mehmet ŞENBAYIR GAZİ UNIVERSITY INSTITUE OF SCINCE AND TECHNOLOGY June 2001 ABSTRACT Recently, semiconductor controlled electrical machines and devices are widely used. Unfortunately their currents and voltages are no longer sinusoidal. In other words they draw currents with high order harmonics. In addition, they draw reactive powers. In this study harmonic sources and their undesired effects are explained. Then active power filters used both to reduce/eliminate these harmonic effects and reactive power drawn by loads have been investigated in details. Most of studies are on how to control active power filter rather than designing power system configuration. There is no an active power filter which is suitable for every type of non-linear loads. It has been observed that harmonics and reactive power problems should be solved at place where they are produced. Therefore clean electrical suply and reduction in power losses can be obtained.
