Abstract:With the transition from locomotives using fossil fuel (diesel) to railway locomotives and train sets in rail systems which works with electricity, transformer technology became an important energy point for these systems. Transformers play an important role in the movement of railway vehicles and in the electrification of railway systems which have a high correlation due to its structure. In this work, after presenting the basic information about the transformers, their types and area of usages have been mentioned. Firstly, it is stated in which situations and how transformers are used according to special needs in rail systems and then, for an exemplary rail system, a suitable 25 MVA AC type transformer was compared with a transformer, that has the same power and meets the city needs on the same parameters. In addition, a comparison has been made with another transformer which is made of same material and has same power, on the basis of efficiency. In this study, the priority is to reveal the design and production characteristics of the selected transformer in the electrification process of the rail system and to determine the functions and effects on the system. After the literature review, technical specifications to be worked together were determined in a transformer producing company, and after getting the transformer which meets the demanding company’s need, the design and production criteria of the 25 MVA, 3Φ/1Φ 154/27.5 kV AC type transformer that the rail system needs are completed and Transformer Matlab Modelling, 3Φ 154/ 1Φ 27.5 kV prototype production and test results are presented
