Abstract:

Entrepreneurship, which is one of the fundamental instruments of economic progress, also began to be discussed in the studies of local-regional planning-development within the context of affects of local dynamics on tourism development. Tourism entrepreneurship was initially set forth with the studies related to small-medium scale enterprises in niche tourism destinationsdeveloped by alternative tourism; however sufficient research was not made on examination of tourism entrepreneurship structure created by local dynamics in destinations developed by mass tourism. In this context, analysis of local dynamics in tourism entrepreneurshipconstitutes the subject of the thesis. Within the scope of the thesis, structure of tourism entrepreneurship in Marmaris settlement at the startup phase of tourism sector and transformation during the development process beside factors affecting this transformation were examined. In-depth interviews, semi-structured two-staged questionaires and historical-spatial analysis constitutes the methodology of the thesis. Tourism entrepreneurship, which was initiated as need/survival entrepreneurship to take the opportunities of tourism emerging as an income generating sector, transformed to growth oriented entrepreneurship during the development process with the investments of entrepreneurs coming from out of Marmaris on increasing bed capacity for mass tourism and profit target. The process of transformation, which might be regarded as successful in economic development point of view, in terms of increase in tourist accommodation capacity, growth of the scale of the enterprises and enhancing accommodation and service quality, was criticized due to reducing and even extincting local-authentic tourism values and disidentification of space. The necessity of supporting local entrepreneurs and small-sized enterprises representing and sustaining authentic values with new/different policies for the protection and sustainability of local, authentic spatial-socio-economic and cultural values constituting a resource for tourism was revealed
