Abstract:

In this thesis, zirconium oxide and gadolinium oxide based inorganic pigments were produced. Sol-gel method was preferred to produce the pigments to increase homogeneity instead of solid state reactions. In sol-gel technique, poly (vinyl alcohol) was used to turn metal acetate solutions into gels. Chromium oxide, cerium oxide and neodymium oxide were doped to zirconium oxide and gadolinium oxide based pigments to gain them different colors. Structural and color properties of produced pigments were investigated. It was attested that produced pigments were consisted of zirconium oxide, gadolinium oxide, chromium oxide, cerium oxide and neodymium oxide with the aid of FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. XRD results showed crystal structure of the pigments. According to SEM images, the pigments were consisted of spherical and pillar-like polycrystals. Elemental analyses of the pigments were performed by EDX method. In addition, mass percent and atom percent were determined. Surface areas of the pigments were determined by BET. Moreover, it was understood that zirconium oxide and gadolinium oxide based pigments are macro and mesoporous materials. Effects of dopant concentration on colors of pigments were investigated by color spectrophotometer. It was seen by color measurements that chromium oxide doped zirconium oxide and gadolinium oxide based pigments are green, cerium oxide doped pigments are pale orange and neodymium oxide doped inorganic pigments are blue.
