Abstract:
Boron compounds with a wide range of uses combined with evolving technology have become one of the industry's most essential products. Elemental boron, boranes, boron hydride, borates and fluoroborates are the most commonly used products from special boron products. Especially fluoroborates are used in many areas in the industry. In this study, barium fluoroborate was synthesized primarily by mechanochemical method and followed by wet method. In the first method, samples were prepared at varying mole rate from elemental boron and barium fluoride and mechanochemical processing was carried out at the ball mill for 2000 minutes. As a result of the process, the optimum reactant mole ratio was determined. Experiments have been continued at varying times and optimum time has been determined. The optimum mole ratio (nB/nBaF2) was 0.85, the optimal time was 2000 minutes and the efficiency in optimal conditions is 61.24% as a result of the experiments. In the wet method, which is the other synthesis method, fluoroboric acid and barium peroxide were used as reactants. The optimum reactant mole ratio, time and temperature are specified. The optimum molar ratio (nHBF4/nBaO2) was found to be 1:3, optimum temperature 60℃ and time 120 minutes. the optimal yield is calculated as 98.05%. Characterization of the synthesized barium fluoroborate samples were carried out with FT-IR, particle size measurements, XRD and TGA analyses. It was observed that there was an interaction between barium fluoroborate molecules and cellulose as a result of FTIR analysis applied to fabrics treated with barium fluoroborate. In the last stage of the study, the parameters for applying on cotton fabrics to barium fluoroborate synthesized by the wet method (immersion temperature, time and solution concentration) have been examined. In addition, LOI tests were performed to examine the flame retardant property. According to the LOI test result, the barium fluoroborate was found to be an effective flame retardant.
