Abstract:

The research was carried out on the purpose of examination of prospective biology teachers’ field proficiency. The study is a survey type descriptive research. Research contains quantitative data supported by qualitative data. Research study group consists of 18 prospective biology teachers studied at the Biology Education Division of a state university in 2017-2018 academic year. Field Proficiency Survey, the Test for Teachers' Field Knowledge (ÖABT) Topics Survey and Readiness to Teaching Profession Scale were applied together to the study group in 2017-2018 academic year and 14 prospective teachers have been interviewed with semi-structured interview forms. Obtained quantitive data has been analyzed by SPSS program, and descriptive analysis has been applied on qualitative data. According to the findings, prospective biology teachers stated that they had considered themselves qualified in General Zoology, Cytology, The Vertabrate, Ecology ve Evolution lessons and they had considered themselves not qualified in Plant Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry lessons. Moreover, prospective biology teachers stated that they would have difficulties in questions about Plant Biology in parallel with lessons they were inadequate in ÖABT. It has been concluded that the reasons for prospective teachers being unproficient in lessons are the lessons given through ordinary presentations, prospective

teachers’ lack of interest in those lessons and their incuriosity about the lessons. When it comes to prospective teachers’ concerns about the Public Personnel Selection Exam (KPSS); it has also been concluded that concern levels of prospective teachers who do not want to work at public sector and do not make preparation are low, and that concern levels of prospective teachers who do not make preparation and face financial difficulties are high.
