Abstract:

History of terms like charity, compassion and affection goes back to the creation of mankind. As implementation of these terms from the creation till today, human beings do favours or help the ones who do a favour. And there are the opposite terms like viciousness, cruelty and violence which also date back to the creation of humanity. Certainly orders and advices of the creator who knows his creatures in the best way has guided humanity to do favours. Thus, as one of the most noteworthy of concrete examples of these favours, there institution of waqf appears. It is apparent that especially with the advent of Islam, Muslims, through pious foundations they established, have built up each and every place they lived in, as being guided by religous references and with guidance of the feeling of goodness encoded by the creator. Waqfs through constituted charity buildings bestow services for public. One of the main functions of waqfs in the Ottoman era is education. Through institutions like schools, medreses, teachers' training schools, dar al-kurra and so on which were built in all-over the territory, educational services were provided free of charge to students. Two of them are medreses of Selimiye in Edirne and Hüsrev Bey in Sarajevo which are monuments of the 16th century. By analyzing the terms concerning these two educational organizations and provided services according to waqfiye, this thesis not only enables us to understand training services performed in history via real documents, but also elucidates through examples the literary style, level and literary arts in waqfiyes of the era which has never been discussed before, by examining the two waqfiyes which were written in Arabic, in terms of Arabic language and rhetoric
