AN ASSESSMENT OF THE COURSES OF BASIC ART EDUCATION AT FACULTY OF VOCATIONAL EDUCATION IN TERMS OF FACULTY STAFF AND STUDENTS

Abstract:

This study aims to find out the level of learning of the course of basic art education by the students, the attitudes and opinions of the students to this course and the views of the instructors offering these courses. The course of basic art education at the faculty of vocational education provide the fundamental background to the courses they will have as well as helping to develop their creative power through different materials and techniques and to comprehend the basic principles and elements of art. The study is regarded necessary in that it will pave the way to find out to what extent the subject of basic art education, contents, objectives and the methods employed will lead to attitude and success in terms of the fulfillment of the objective of the course. In order to find out the comprehension level of the students on basic art education, the findings related to the 1st sub-objectives were reached. The Access test prepared was administered to the first graders as the pre and the post test. In order to reach the 2nd sub-objective, an attitude test was administered to the students and pre and post test were performed to find out whether there is a difference in their attitudes. Qualitative data were also used to support the quantitative data. Focus group interviews were held with the first graders taking this course, basic art education. Besides, interviews were also held with the instructors. Next, observations were performed by the researcher which made it possible to reach the findings of the 3rd subobjectives. In order to reach the last and the 4th sub-objective of the study, the midterm and final grades assigned by the instructors were used to find out a significant relationship in the results of the access test administered by the researcher. In order to quantitatively analyze the differences between the averages, Kruskal-Wallis H Testi, Wilcoxon Paired Two sample Test, and for the independent samples, One-Way Variance Analysis (ANOVA) tests were performed. In the analysis of the quantitative data, descriptive analysis method was employed. The results of the study indicate that the course subjects were not comprehended theoretically, instructors wee not efficient in eliciting theoretical knowledge, students do not develop positive attitudes towards the course, and students do not express positive views in the assessment and evaluation procedures used by the instructors. Besides, students think that instructors are moderately efficient in terms of field education of the instructor, the subject of the field, planning, instructional process and classroom management. The physical conditions of the classrooms and workshops were found to be insufficient. The findings of this study suggest that the course of basic art education should be offered by specialists in the field, the equipment of the course should be improved and thus leading to productivity in the course delivery and the present curriculum should be revised and extended so as to keep updated.
