Abstract:

In educational settings, it is observed that some art educators ignore the main objectives of the visual arts course and do not use various teaching methods and techniques effectively in the lessons. So much so that during the art education process, it is seen that students refrain from producing new ideas and expressing these ideas, and make memorization, copy or template descriptions. As a result of this, it can be said that the resulting works are generally far from creativity. In this study, it was aimed to give the students the opportunity to express their ideas and produce original works without fear of making mistakes with the brainstorming technique, which prioritizes generating creative ideas. This research, using the method of action research which is one of the qualitative research methods, was carried out in the 2020-2021 academic year, in September and October, for a total of 4 weeks, through distance education. A group of 14 students, 6 boys and 8 girls, attending the 6th grade elective visual arts lesson participated in the study. The data in the research were obtained through semi-structured interviews and document analysis. Descriptive analysis and document analysis were used to analyze the data. In the study, it was found that students used the ideas of other friends and used their imaginations effectively while creating new ideas with the brainstorming technique. It has been observed that the students usually express their favorite ideas while expressing their ideas in the lesson, and sometimes they have difficulties in expressing their ideas due to the confusion and noise. It was found that the students realized that they could use their imaginations with the brainstorming technique and that their perspective towards the visual arts lesson changed positively. At the same time, it was found that the pictures produced by the students were successful in terms of quality. As a result, it has been observed that the brainstorming technique has a positive effect on the students' ability to produce new and creative ideas, express their opinions, discover some personality traits they have, their perspective on the visual arts lesson and the products. A brainstorming technique can be suggested to support students to produce effective ideas by activating their high-level thinking skills, to produce creative products, and to make the visual arts lesson more efficient.
