Abstract:The main purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of 5 E model based on constructivist theory approach over traditionally designed students in biology education. The study was designed with a quasi-experimental style by applying pre-tests and post-test to the groups. The classes were randomly assigned as control and experimental groups. Students in the contro group were instructed by traditionally designed biology instruction whereas students in the experimental group were taught by the instruction based on 5 E model. In order to measure the academic success level of students, the success test was prepared. In addition, semi-structured interviews were applied to investigate the ideas of experimental groups after the teaching of the topics. The sample of the study was made up students of Gazi University, Faculty of Education, Department of Biology Education in 2007-2008 academic year. The control group with the traditional teaching method consisted of 15 students; and the experimental groups were composed of 14 students. The classes were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The application attended 8 weeks. Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Mann Whitney U-Test were used to analyze the quantitative data. The analys of semi-structured interviews was given as of report. The data which was obtained from the research were analysed with SPSS 16.0 packet program. The results indicated that statistically there was a high rate of increase in the success of the experimental group students than the success of the control group students. In accordance with the analys of semi-structured interviews, the students had more fun in the lessons in which constructive approach methods and took a positive attitude. According to the findings 5 E model which was based on the constructivist approach is more effective than traditional method for students'learning. The base cause of result is that 5 E model enable configure of and increase continuance of information.
