Abstract:

There is no single examination method that can be applied for every tangible incident in digital forensics, and the targets to be investigated can consist of thousands of different combinations, both hardware and software level. As a matter of fact, today, technological device manufacturers produce devices that differ from each other in terms of functionality (camera, telephone, computer, printer, television, etc.), as well as devices that have the same function and serve the same purpose, but differ from each other in terms of various qualities. For example, although smartphones are basically produced to serve the same purpose, they have features that differ from each other in terms of hardware and/or software level. In this study, the examination of Android smartphones in the context of digital forensics is also discussed. However, as mentioned, Android smartphones have many operating system versions and hardware diversity, and it is difficult to examine these phones because the variety is increasing day by day. For this reason, it is necessary to determine the examination method by taking into account the characteristics of the target smartphone. Thus, current inspection methods are not suitable for every smartphone or they may be insufficient for smartphones that will be produced in the future. In this study, many open source tools that can be used in the examination of Android smartphones have been tested in practice and the results that will serve the digital forensic practice have been obtained, and how to act in all digital forensic processes has been revealed. By testing open source tools, explanations have been made regarding both acquiring the logical or physical image of the target device, the analysis of logical or physical images, and the detection of anti-digital forensic methods used by the perpetrators. Especially since these tools are open source, the costs will be considerably reduced if digital forensic investigations are carried out with the tools in this study.
