Abstract:

Renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury occurs in various clinical conditions including kidney transplantation, kidney operations, shock and sepsis. In this study, we aim to investigate the effects of Lycopen, an anti-inflomatory and anti-oxidant agent, on renal I/R injury. In this study, 24 Wistar Albino rats, weight between 200-250 gr, were divided into 4 groups. Median laparotomy was performed to all rats under anestesia. Group K was uninjured and untreated. In Group L (Lycopene group) recived 100 mg/kg Lycopen via oral route. In Group I (Ischemia group), both renal arteries were clemped for 45 minuties while in group T (Treatment group) 30 minutes before clemping renal arteries 100 mg/kg Lycopene was administered by gavage. At the sixth hour of reperfusion, blood samples and tissue specimens were obtained from all rats. BUN, creatinin, MDA, GSH levels were utilized in blood samples and renal histopathology were evaluated. In treatment group, blood MDA leves, tubular vacuolisation, loss of brush border and tubular dilatation were statistically lower when compared with ischemia group (p<0,05). Although it was statistically unsignificant, blood BUN, creatinin, tissue MDA and tissue and blood GSH levels were improved in favor of treatment group (p>0,05). In conclusion, the results of this study demonstrates that, administration of Lycopene before renal I/R injury can prevent renal injury in terms of biochemical and histopathological parameters.
