Abstract:

The trends of modernism and postmodernism create traces that need to be analyzed with their administrative, economic, sociological, cultural and spatial influences as well as the conditions of their emergence. Based on metho explain and Turkey aims to determine the transition of urban modernism and postmodernism. In this context, at the first stage; In order to reveal the modernity / postmodernity situations of cities by quantitative data analysis, the process of creating a set of indicators was initiated. In this context, the conceptual framework of modernism and postmodernism movements has been tried to be revealed with its effects on cities and urbanization processes in relation to space through literature review. In the second stage, it was aimed to determine the indicators for revealing the modernity / postmodernity situations of the cities with quantitative data analysis. The study focused on the Turkey's change process 1990s up to the 2010s last and defined as "the transition from modernism to postmodernism" in the literature. In the period after 1980, modernity and postmodernity components of Turkey cities were analyzed by obtaining quantitative data base used in the Turkey Socio-Economic Development Index(SEGE) workings that carried out by the Ministry of Development and State Planning Organization(DPT). A new set of indicators has been created in order to measure the level of modernity and postmodernity of Turkey cities. In the indicator set, 12 criteria defining modernism and 22 criteria defining postmodernism were selected under the indicator titles of "organizational / managerial", "economic", "social / ethical" and "spatial". Cities has been stratified by evaluating 34 criteria obtained in total with Principal Component Analysis and Cluster Analysis methods. In the study, it is revealed that cities with high index value of modernity specialize in the industrial sector, while cities with high postmodernity value specialize in services and / or tourism. As a result of the study, it is expected that the method used and field research fill an important gap for Turkey and will guide the studies of "urban development stratification for understanding the modern and postmodern space".
