Abstract:The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of teacher characteristics, teacher qualifications, teacher practices qualities and working conditions of mathematics teachers on 4th and 8th grade Turkish students' mathematics achievement in TIMSS 2011. In this study, correlational research design was used. The sample of this study was 6894 students and 243 teachers in 4th grade; and 6307 students and 220 teachers in 8th grade in Turkey. Teachers' responses taken from TIMSS 2011 were divided into four categories as teacher characteristics, teacher qualifications, teacher practices and working conditions. The regression level of variables in each category for mathematics achievement of 4th and 8th grade Turkish students in TIMSS 2011 was investigated via multiple linear regression. According to the research results, teacher quality obtained from TIMSS 2011 teacher questionnaire account for fairly minimal part of the variance (about between 12% and 1%) of mathematics achievement of 4th and 8th grade students. It is considered that the reason for this result is teacher questionnaire in TIMSS 2011 fails short of determining teacher qualities. Besides, some important variables such as school characteristics and socio-economic status have an important role in the mathematics achievement of the students in Turkey.
