Abstract:

Object In our study, we aim to prevent peridural fibrosis and arachnoiditis after laminectomy by im adminisitration of etanercept. Material- Method 24 Wistar male rats, weighted 200+/- 20 mg, were used in our study. Animals firstly divided into two groups and each group also divided into two subgroups containing 6 animals. The groups were named as control 1, control 2, Enbrel 1 and Enbrel 2. Each animal underwent L4-5 laminectomy under sterile conditions and suitible anesthesia. 0,5 mg etanercept was administrated im for three days after surgery to the treatment group. Each animal was sacrified and the laminectomy areas of animals were ecsized en blocked after three weeks for groups control 1 and Enbrel 1; six weeks for groups control 2 and Enbrel 2. Fibrosis adhesion degrees, peridural fibrosis according to Robertson scale and arachnoiditis degrees were determined by histopathological examination. Each group were statistically compared due to their results. Results There were significiant difference on three criteria between the control group and the teratment group. Peridural fibrosis and arachnoiditis were statistically fewer in the treatment group. There were no significiant difference on peridural fibrosis and arachnoiditis between either control 1 and 2 groups or Enbrel 1 and 2 groups. Conclusion Taking all these points into the consideration, Etanercept is an effective agent to prevent peridural fibrosis and arachnoiditis.
