Abstract:
Educational environments and materials play an explicit or implicit role in the formation of gender stereotypes. This research aims to examine social studies textbooks that contain intensive content in terms of gender issues in the context of gender stereotypes. For this purpose, the textbooks for social studies and social studies education, which were accepted as textbooks between 1934-2019, were examined. The data source of the research consists of homeland information and citizenship information textbooks, which the Ministry of National Education accepted to be taught in the schools for social studies education between 1934-1972 and social studies textbooks taught between 1974-2019. In the research, document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods, was used as data collection method. Content analysis was used to analyze the data obtained from textbooks. As a result of the research, it has been determined that the roles given to individuals in the family are gender-based, the objects and colors identified with individuals are gender-based, individuals' personal occupations and actions are shaped by gender and there are gender-based expressions embedded in the language.
