Abstract:

The purpose of this investigation is to determine whether group piano instruction has significant effect on development of junior students' in Gazi University, Department of Music Education, functional piano skills. The research is an experimental study and the pretest-posttest design control group model is applied. The study group of the research consists of 40 junior students in GU, Department of Music Education in the fall semester of the academic year 2010-2011. The experimental study is created with the identification of control and experimental groups through random sampling. Points of both groups are equivalent and students are divided into groups randomly. Each of the experimental and control groups consist of 20 students. Before the experiment, groups have completed Performance Test of Harmonization and Transposition with Piano prepared by researchers to assess their levels based on harmonization and transposition. The experimental group is provided with piano instructor during 6 weeks in a group setting. Meanwhile, control groups have maintained their individual piano lessons. Pretest-posttest practice of students is recorded by the researcher. Video images are evaluated through Performance Test of Harmonization and Transpozition with Piano by experts. In the study, pretest-posttest difference scores of experimental and control groups are identified for analysis of data. The difference between both groups' difference scores was tested with t-test. Thus, it is deduced whether the experiment is efficient. SPSS 19.0 packaged software is used for the analysis in the study. As a result of the research, points of students involved in experiment and control groups differentiate from each other. It is concluded that posttest performance points of students included in experimental group are significantly higher than points of students in control group as a result of group piano instruction. Group piano instruction has a profound influence on students to improve their skill of harmonization and transpozition.
