Effects of nickel oxide and nickel oxide nanoparticules on rat small intestine tissue

Abstract:
Nanoparticles (NPs) are highly active materials with sizes below 100 nanometers and have different and superior properties than bulk materials. Nickel oxide microparticles (NiO-MP) are a widely used compound in industry, and it has been stated that nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO-NP) cause toxicity in living things and are a strong oxidative stress inducer. This study aimed to investigate the effects of NiO-MP and NiO-NPs on rat small intestine tissue. In the study, 42 male Wistar rats were divided into 7 groups. 1. Control group, 2. NiO-MP (150 mg/kg/day) orally administered group, 3. NiO-MP (20 mg/kg/day) intraperitoneally administered group, 4. NiO-MP (1 mg/kg/day) administered group day) intravenously administered group, 5. NiO-NP (150 mg/kg/day) orally administered group, 6. NiO-NP (20 mg/kg/day) intraperitoneally administered group, 7. NiO-NP (1 mg/kg) /day) intravenously administered group. After 21 days, malondialdehyde (MDA) level and antioxidant enzyme activities [superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST)] were measured in the small intestine tissue of rats and histopathological changes were examined. While NiO-MP and NiO-NP caused an increase in the MDA level in the rats intestinal tissues, they caused a decrease in antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, CAT, GPx and GST). In histological examinations, NiO-MP and NiO-NP generally caused shortening, blunting and irregularities in the villi in the rats small intestinal tissues.
