Abstract:

Young shoots of Rubus species have been used for healing of wounds, infected insect bites and pimples in folk medicine for ages. In order to detect the phytotherapeutical usage and evaluate the wound healing activity of R. sanctus distributed widely in our country and used in folk medicine, methanol extract from the aerial parts of the plant was prepared. The wound healing activity of the methanol extract was evaluated by measuring the inhibition of metalloprotease enzymes called hyaluronidase, collagenase and elastase which play an important role in healing process. The methanol extract of the aerial parts of the plant which was found to be active was fractionated by using silicagel column chromatography. The active fraction was subjected to preperative thin layer chromatography to obtain the active compound quercetin-3-O-β-galactoside (hyperoside) . The in vitro studies were performed to enlighten the compound s mechanism of action. It has been suggested that the isolated compound plays a role in wound treatment via the inhibition of the collagenase enzyme.
