Abstract:

This study was conducted on 53 patients and 23 healthy controls to investigate the relationship between scapular muscle endurance (SME) and muscle strength, pain, and function in shoulder rotator cuff lesion. Subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS) was present in 25 patients (47,2%) and partial rotator cuff tears (RCT) in 28 patients (52,8%) in the study group. Of the patients in the SIS group, 11 were female and 14 were male, the mean age was 41±9 years; 16 of the patients in the partial RCT group were female, 12 were male, and the mean age was 54±5 years. In the control group, there were 12 females and 11 males, and the mean age was 48±10 years. After detailed narrative and physical features of all patients were noted, pain, clinical tests, range of motions, SME, muscle strength, the Functional Impairment Test-Head, and Neck / Shoulder / Arm (FIT-HaNSA) assessments, and shoulder status criteria: Constant & Murley, Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI) , Nothingam Health Profile (NHP) were performed. The relationships between SME and muscle strength, pain, and function in patients and control groups were examined. Statistically significant relationship was found positively in varying grades between SME and serratus anterior, middle trapezius, shoulder flexor, extensor and abductor, supraspinatus, pectoralis major and wrist flexor and extensor muscle strength in partial RCT group, and between lower trapezius muscle strength and SME in addition to these muscles in SIS group (p 0,05). In SIS and partial RCT groups, positive, excellent and statistically significant relationship was detected between SME and FIT-HaNSA (p<0,05). In control group, positive, moderate, again statistically significant relationship was detected (p<0,05). In conclusion, it has been found that muscle strength may be reduced, both objective and subjective shoulder parameters may worsen and activity pain may increase in patients with reduced SME and partial RCT. It was concluded that shaping of exercise programs of muscle groups related to SME in rehabilitation studies and SMEs should be increased in patients with SIS and partial RCT in order to reduce shoulder pain and improve its functionality.
