IV THE MAXIMUM LIKELIHOOD AND SOME ALTERNATIVE ESTIMATORS OF INTRACLASS AND INTERCLASS CORRELATION COEFFICIENTS (M.Sc. Thesis) Cem GENÇTÜRK GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY August 2005 ABSTRACT In the analysis of familial data, the degree of resemblance sib-sib concerning a certain characteristic is measured by the intraclass correlation and for example between different types of member such as mother-sib resemblance is measured by the interclass correlation coefficients. The intraclass and interclass correlation coefficients mostly is estimated by method of maximum likelihood but since of being based on the iteration this method shows computational diffuculties. For prevending the difficulties, some easily computable estimators are proposed for interclass and intraclass correlation coefficients in the literature. In this study it is aimed to acknowledge these proposed estimators and a numerical application was made on a sample.
