Abstract:

Hearing loss is one of the most prevalent health problems. To evaluate hearing losses, various different objective and subjective methods have been proposed; among those methods, speech audiometry has been a very important step. Word Recognition Score provides considerable information about degree and type of hearing loss; further these scores guide the hearing aid management. This process becomes more important especially with children. For Turkish language, there is no word recognition list, properly designed for children. Hence, we developed four different monosyllabic word lists including 25 words for the children between 7 and 12 years of age. We followed a similar procedure (to obtain proper words, make up different lists, record word lists to a digital medium and use these lists for assessment of hearing) with other researchers at the literature. We found that there are no significant differences between those lists by means of phonemic balance. Those lists used to obtain word recognition scores of 77 children. With that process we conclude that there is no difference between scores that obtained from different lists and difficulty of those lists. With our research which aims to remove the critical absence of that essential material, we developed the first monosyllabic word recognition test in Turkish language for the children.
