Abstract:

Although they receive years of foreign language training, students in our country cannot carry their knowledge into daily life due to various reasons. Some of the reasons for this are the insufficiency of teaching methods, rote learning and lack of adequate study. The objective of this research is to determine the impact of creative drama method on university French preparatory class students' academic achievement and on their attitutude towards French speaking. The implementation of this research was conducted in a state university in Ankara for three weeks with French preparatory class students. The sample groups were assigned as the control group (N= 15) and the experimental group (N= 16) by convenience sampling method. In this research, which is a quantitative study, posttest control group weak experimental design method was used to determine students' French class achievements, and pre and posttest control group quasi-experimental design method was used to determine their attitude towards French speaking. The data for the research was obtained from the achievement test, attitude scale and journals kept by the experiment group after each class. The achievement test was applied to students after classes and the attitude scale was applied before and after implementation. In order to identify the differences between the averages in the analysis of the quantitative data collected; the t-Test and the ANCOVA Test among parametric analysis were applied. The findings of the research show that there has been a statistical meaningful difference in the French achievement of teacher candidates of the experimental group whereas there is not a meaningful difference between the attitudes of students towards French speaking. The findings pertaining to the journals of the teacher candidates in the experiment group indicate that the in-class education practices have been beneficial and effective. In the light of these findings, it may be assumed that creative drama has a positive effect on the French learning achievement of students.
