Abstract:
Developments in science and technology in recent years have increased the need of countries for qualified individuals and led to the emergence of new approaches in education systems. STEM education approach is one of the latest examples of this. In this study, it was aimed to examine the STEM integration processes of ninth grade students studying in a science high school. In the research; the views of ninth grade students studying at science high school about STEM integration perceptions, content integration processes, engineering design processes, technology integration processes and STEM integration process were focused on. Case study design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. Participants of the study consist of twenty-seven students in ninth grade of a science high school in Turkey. In order to determine the STEM integration processes of the students, different data collection tools were used, which were developed by the researcher and were finalized in line with the opinions of experts. Moreover, data diversification was carried out by interviewing the practitioner teacher and focus group discussion with the students. As a result of the research, it was determined that the students studying at the science high school have positive and negative opinions and different perceptions about the STEM integration process. Students state that learning about the skills development (cognitive thinking, problem solving, observation, interpretation and critical thinking), collaboration, productivity, integrated learning, personal development, teamwork adaptation and professional preferences (science-based profession preference, teamwork career choice, and working in innovation-oriented companies) during a teaching based on the STEM integration process are beneficial. However, it was determined that students had negative views on STEM education in terms of interest in the subject, method used, application time, lack of material, self-efficacy (technology, design, etc.) and teamwork. In the study, it was determined that ninth grade

students studying in a science high school performed the engineering design process, technology integration and content integration using different strategies, criteria and decision-making processes. In addition, it was determined that the students were at the targeted level in determining the problem, developing solution suggestions and the integration of interdisciplinary information, but could not reach the target level in the design process. In conclusion, it can be said that the STEM education approach is very important in terms of both the development of skills and learning processes. For this reason, it is considered important to adopt a holistic approach in order to increase the quality of STEM education and to realize the process successfully.
