Abstract:

As a result of rapid changes that have been occuring in information and communication

technologies, smart phones, laptops and other technological devices have quickly taken

their place in people’s lives. People feel the necessity of changing and organising their

lives according to these technological conditions. Education also gets its share from this

and keeps renewing according to the changing conditions. Along with the benefits of the

fast development in technology, the concept of internet addiction arises as a result of

misuse of technology. In this study, determining the relationship between teachers’ and

students’ internet addiction levels and their Information Technology competence is aimed.

At the same time, revealing if there is a significant difference between teachers’ and

students’ digital addiction levels and their Information Technology competence according

to their demographic features (gender, family income, educational status, internet usage

time, having or not having a compuper and internet at home, etc.) is aimed. The reseach

done in the context of this aim has the characteristic of a relational screening model. In the

extent of the research, applications were carried out with 371 students and 269 teachers

who study or work at vocational high schools that are under Tuzla District National

Education Directorate. In the extent of the research, in order to determine students’ and

teachers’ internet addiction levels, “Internet Addiction Scale” that was developed by Balta

and Horzum (2008) and in order to find out students’ and teachers’ Information

Technology self-competence perception, “Information Technology Self-competence

Perception Scale” that was developed by Ekici, Ekici and Kara are used. In the extent of

the research, the result that although internet addiction levels of vocational high school

students are higher than internet addiction levels of vocational high school teachers in a

significant manner, their information technology self-competence perception is lower in a

significant manner was derived. The result that there is a medium level of relation between

the students’ information technology self-competence perception and their internet

addiction levels was derived. The result that there is a medium level of relation between

the teachers’ information technology self-competence perception and their internet

addiction levels was derived.
