Abstract:

In this thesis, the effects of different coatings and coating systems are investigated in term of oxidation resistance of gas turbines, which operate at high temperatures. In today's aviation technology, efficiency and performance have become two of the most critical characteristics for manufacturers. Ongoing, intensive research and development activities are actualize to improve engine performance and all recent aircrafts are design with this perspective. Three different types of gas turbine engines turbofan, turboprop and turboshaft that are used on the majority of the aircrafts that are used in military and civil aviation. The common aspect of these engine systems is that they all have a compressor and turbine system. Thanks to compressor system, intake air compresses before joining with fuel. Compressed air flows through combustion chamber and increases its pressure with effect of combustion. Then compressed hot air goes through directly turbine system. The compressor and turbine stages are therefore some of the main factors while evaluating the engine characteristics and performance. High-pressure turbines have limitations especially in terms of material and design. Two of these constraints are the oxidation and corrosion, which causes from high temperatures and combustion gases. In a way, the maximum serving temperature of the turbine blade and maximum service time of turbine blade at highest temperature are two of the most important parameters to consider and improve the performance of an engine. Therefore, in this thesis aimed to determine which coating techniques have advantages in terms of cost, performance and applicability. In the experimental part of this study, Codep coating and solution diffusion coating applied to two different materials, which are CMSX-4 and CM247-LC. After application, samples were tested and the study aimed to determine which coating technic has better performance on hot corrosion and oxidation resistance. Additionally behavior of coating on different materials were investigated
