Abstract:

Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the root canal preparation abilities of XP-endo Shaper (XP),

Reciproc Blue (RB) and ProTaper Universal (PTU) instruments on the incidence of microcrack

formation, root canal volume change after root canal preparation and voids after root canal obturation

using micro-computed tomographic (μCT) imaging. Materials and Methods: 260 extracted human

mandibular first and second molars were scanned firstly with cone-beam CT (CBCT) and the mesial

roots with Vertucci Type IV root canal configuration and angle between 10°-20° were selected. After

the investigation, 50 teeth selected and scanned with SkyScan 1174 μCT scanner at 21μm resolution.

30 teeth that have similar root canal volume were selected and assigned to 3 experimental groups (n

= 10).The root canal preparations were done with XP, RB and PTU instrument systems. The roots

were scanned using μCT imaging before and after the root canal preparation. Then the root canal

obturation were done with each systems’ single gutta-percha cones and root canal sealer. Then the

roots were scanned using μCT imaging. NRecon software was used for the reconstruction of the

images. DataViewer software was used to evaluate the presence of dentinal microcracks. CTAn and

CTVol softwares were used to analyse the root canal volume change after preparation, presence of

voids after obturation and modelling. Results: No new dentinal microcracks were observed in the XP

and RB groups however it was observed that these systems changed some of the dentinal microcracks

into complete cracks. The PTU system significantly increased the percentage of microcracks

compared with preoperative specimens after root canal preparation (P<0.05). There was no

significant difference on the root canal volume change after root canal preparation and voids after

obturation between the groups (P> 0.05). Coclusion: XP-endo Shaper and Reciproc Blue systems did

not induce the formation of new dentinal microcracks whereas PTU system did on the mesial roots

on mandibular molars. XP-endo Shaper and Reciproc Blue systems have converted some of the

dentinal micro cracks into complete cracks. All systems showed similar results on the root canal

volume change after preparation and voids after obturation.
