Abstract:11 INVESTIGATION OF MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF Fe- Fe3C COMPOSITE MATERIAL PRODUCED BY MECHANICAL ALLOYING TECNIQUE (M. Sc. Thesis) MEHMET SUMER GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTITU OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 2003 ABSTRACT In this study, elemental iron powders contained 1% wt carbon black were mechanical alloyed under argon atmosphere by using a high-energy ball mill for 2,5; 3,5 and 5 hours durations. Then particle size, shape and compressibility of the alloyed powders were characterized. Afterwards, MAed powders were pressed at 1000 Mpa to produce standard transverse rupture specimens with dimension of 6.35x12.70x31.70 mm. Specimens were then sintered at 1125, 1150, and 1175 °C for 2 h under argon atmosphere in a tube furnace. Optic microscopy studies were conducted to determine effect of temperature on Fe3C transformation degree of sintered specimen. Transverse repute strength and hardness tests were carried out to fined out the mechanical properties of specimens. The results showed that, transverse rupture strength and microstructure of sintered compact specimens are influenced by mechanical alloying time and sintering temperature respectively.
