Abstract:

The main aim of this study is to synthesize the polycaprolactone (PCL)-halloysite (HNT) nanocomposite material for biomedical application. The study was carried out in two steps. In the first stage, in order to provide homogenous distribution by enhancing interaction between PCL and HNT, HNT was modified with silane groups of 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS), 3-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTS) and 3-Aminopropyl(diethoxy)methylsilane (APDES). Nanocomposite films of PCL/HNT, PCL-HNT/ASP, PCL-HNT/GPTS and PCL-HNT/APDES were prepared by using solvent casting method. The effect of modification on synthesized nanocomposite films was characterized with FTIR, XRD, DSC, TGA, DSA and AFM analyses. The crystallinity of PCL-HNT nanocomposites have decreased between %18-38 by modification of HNT with APS and GPTS. In addition, it was seen to have hydrophobic character of PCL-HNT nanocomposites with contact angle measurements.XRD results show that broad peak at 2θ=10-12° has shown exfoliated and intercalated nanocomposites together in APDES modification. Thus homogeneous distribution in the PCL matrix was not achieved and microcomposite material occurred with the HNT/APDES modification. The second stage of the project was carried out nanofiber synthesis by electrospinning methods. Electrospinnig was preferred because it provides higher surface area/volume ratio in fibers, porosity at nanosize and mass production compared to other methods. The effect of solution and process parameters on nanofiber was investigated in electrospinning studies. Nanofiber was produced with %12(wt/v) PCL solutions with HNT at two concentrations % 0,5 and %1 (wt/v) at 1,5 mL/h, 27 cm and 25 kV in electrospinning process parameters. In the biological analyses with nanofiber samples, it has been seen that water absorption and hydrolytic degradation characteristics can be controlled with the concentration of HNT in PCL-HNT nanofibers. Consequently, this study concluded that synthesized PCL-HNT nanocomposite material will provide advantages in biomedical applications such as tissue scaffold, drug delivery systems, wound dressings and suture.
