Abstract:The purpose of the present study is to determine the power sources utilized by school directors according to teachers and directors' opinions. Moreover, the study looks at the relationship between the power sources and gender, subject area, age, seniority, type of the school and management style variables. The study employed survey method. The universe of the study consists of 2613 secondary school teachers and 268 school directors working in schools in Muğla in 2013-2014 school year. The sampling of the study consists of 646 teachers and 101 directors selected through stratified sampling method from the universe of the study. In the study, Organizational Power Source scale was employed. The following findings were obtained in the study. In light of the teachers' opinions, it can be argued that the directors utilize these power sources to a great extent; expertise, charisma, rewarding, legal and coercive powers. On the other hand, the directors' opinions reveal that they use all the power sources to a great extent. According to the teachers' opinions, there is a significant gender-based difference in terms of utilization of legal and coercive power sources and this difference favors the female teachers. There is also a significant difference based on seniority in the use of rewarding power and the source of this difference is the difference between 1-10 years and 11-20 years. It was concluded that there is a significant correlation between the use of organizational power sources and management style. According to the directors' opinions, there is a significant gender-based difference in terms of utilization of the power source of expertise and this difference favors the male teachers. Based on the opinions stated by the teachers and directors, it can be argued that the scores concerning the directors' state of using organizational power sources reveal that the directors look at the power sources of charisma, rewarding, legal and coercive powers more positively.
