Abstract:Increasing innovations in science and technology, differences in the understanding of education in today's world where the effects of science are felt to a great extent. Towards the end of the 20th century in the world, it has been noticed that people of the next century will not be able to be trained with a teaching approach in which knowledge is passed passively, the student is constantly conditioned, and his behavior is more concerned with his or her mind. The constructive approach has gained importance in order to reach the desired results in the field of education and to prevent the negativities of the traditional approach. Constructivist approach; It is an approach that aims to teach students how to build new knowledge on schematics that students possess. Concept cartoons are one of the teaching techniques that will serve the purpose of constructivist approach. Concept caricatures are cartoon style drawings in which 3 or 4 characters discuss an event related to everyday life. It can be said that the concept cartoons that can serve as bridges between the current schemes of students and science concepts support the constructivist approach. In this study, it is aimed to investigate the effect of concept cartoons used in teaching 6th grade science class Force and Movement unit on students' academic achievement and motivation for learning science. The pre-test was used to obtain data for this purpose, and a semi-experimental design with control group was used. The research was carried out in the 2016-2017 academic year Afyonkarahisar Province, with 32 students and 33 control group students studying in the sixth grade of a public school in the center. Lessons are taught in the control group in the direction of the curriculum of the Science Teaching Program, while in the experimental group, the lessons are supported by concept cartoons. Science Achievement Test and Student Motivation Questionnaire were applied to the students of experiment and control group as pre-test and post-test. The application lasted 4 weeks and the data were analyzed in the SPSS 21 program. According to the analysis results; It was found that there was a statistically significant difference between the average scores of the achievement and motivation test scores of the experimental and control group students. In this context, concept cartoons have been achieved as a result of increasing academic motivation and academic success. According to the results obtained without working, some suggestions were made about the use of concept cartoon in Science courses.
