Abstract:

Ottoman State abolished Crnojeviç Dynasty and founded an autonomous regime in Montenegro which it domineered in 1479. As of 1516, Orthodox men of religion called vladika who were appointed by election, started to govern Montenegro. This situation continued until I. Danilo Petroviç was chosen as vladika in 1696. I. Danilo Petroviç left the reign to his relatives and established a dynasty thereby starting the rulership of Petroviç Family who governed Montenegro until 1918. Vladikas who were the members of Petroviç Family started struggling in order to free themselves from Ottoman rule. One of the most important stages of this struggle was that II. Danilo declared a princedom in Montenegro on 21th March 1852 after abolishing the vladika rule that represented Ottoman hegemony. As from the mid 19th century, European countries that were much more interested now with Montenegro conflict interfered in the problem in favour of Montenegro during the 1852-1853 Montenegro-Ottoman State War and the 1862 Montenegro-Ottoman State War. Confiding in the support of European countries, Montenegro went to war again with Ottoman State in the years between 1876 and 1877. In 1877 Ottoman State lost the Russian-Ottoman War starting in 1877 and Montenegro gained its independence following the Berlin Agreement which was signed on 13th July 1878.
