Abstract:
In this study, it was aimed to examine the effect of geography education on reducing the
ecological footprint of secondary school students. 29 students studying in secondary
education institutions in Amasya province participated in the research in the 2021-2022
academic year. The qualitative study model was used in the research. In the data collection
process of the research, a semi-structured interview form prepared by the researcher by
taking expert opinion was used. In addition, ecological footprint measurements of the
participants were also made by filling out the ecological footprint measurement tool on the
“http://www.footprintcalculator.org/home/en” page. At the end of the research, the data
obtained from the students with audio recordings were first transferred to the Word program.
Afterwards, the answers given by the students to the questions and the sub-items of the
questions were evaluated according to the categories. At the end of the study, it was
determined that the awareness levels of the students about the ecological footprint were low.
On the other hand, it has been determined that students frequently exhibit some behaviors in
their daily lives to reduce their ecological footprint. At the same time, it has been determined
that the ecological footprint scores of the students are a factor that affects their perspective
on the ecological footprint. As a result, it can be said that the ecological footprint awareness
of secondary school students is low, and in this context, some measures should be taken to
increase ecological footprint awareness.
