An examination of the effect of social values education program on social skill acquisition for the children attending kindergarten

Abstract:

This research was conducted with the aim of the development of the Pre-school Social Values Education Program and the investigation of the effect of this program on the children attending to kindergarten social skill acquisition. The effect of social values education program was examined through pre-test, post-test and control group experimental design. The participants of the study were determined by purposeful sampling technique and were composed of two kindergartens which are located in Tokat province. One of the kindergartens was the experimental group while the other one was the control group. The study group was composed of a total of 40 children, 20 children in experimental group and 20 children in control group. General Information Form, which was developed by the researcher, and the "Pre-School Social Skills Evaluation Scale", which was developed by Ömeroğlu and his colleagues (2012) were used as the data collection tools. The "Social viii Values Education Program", which was developed by the researcher, was used with the aim of determining the effects of social values education on the social skill acquisition of children attending to kindergarten. This program consisted of thirty-six educational sessions. The education program was conducted three days a week during 12 weeks by the researcher. In order to determine the effects of Social Values Education Program on social skill acquisition of the children attending to kindergarten, Mann Whitney U test was run to make comparisons in the independent groups, and Wilcoxon Sign Test was run to make comparisons in dependent groups. The significance level was determined to be 0.05. With the aim of determining the retention of the education program conducted, the Pre-School Social Skills Evaluation Scale was conducted on the children attending to kindergarten in the experiment group after three weeks of the completion of the program. As a result of the findings, the social values education program was determined to be effective on the social skill acquisition of children attending to kindergarten and also this effect was permanent. Some suggestions were made for the pre-school teachers and researchers in accordance with the findings.
