Fenamiphos-induced small intestinal toxicity in rats and the protective effect of naringenin

Abstract:

Pesticides are chemical substances frequently used for various purposes in agricultural control. Pesticides have toxic effects on the circulatory, digestive, excretory, endocrine and reproductive systems of living things, especially the nervous system. Fenamiphos is a colorless waxy solid organophosphorus pesticide. Naringenin, located in the flavanone group of flavonoids, has positive effects on human health. Naringenin is a pharmacologically potential antioxidant and is a compound with anticarcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic, hepatoprotective and nephroprotective activities. In this study, the protective effect of naringenin on the toxicity of fenamiphos, an organophosphate pesticide, in the small intestine of rats was investigated. In the study, rats were divided into 4 groups and there were 6 rats in each group. 1st group: Control group, 2nd group: Naringenin (50 mg/kg b.w.) treated group, 3rd group: Fenamiphos (0.76 mg/kg b.w.) treated group, 4th group: Naringenin (50 mg/kg b.w.) ) plus fenamiphos (0.76 mg/kg b.w.) treated group. The substances were given to the experimental animals by gavage once a day for 28 days. At the end of the experiment, malondialdehyde (MDA), the end product of lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzyme activities [superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione S transferase (GST)] and acetylcholine esterase enzyme activities were detected in the small intestine tissues of the rats. has been researched. As a result of the study, a statistically significant increase was observed when the control group and the fenamiphos-treated group were compared in terms of MDA level. A statistically significant decrease was observed when the fenamiphos plus naringenin treated group was compared with the fenamiphos treated group. In terms of antioxidant enzyme activity, a statistically significant decrease was observed when the control group was compared with the fenamiphos treated group, while a statistically significant increase was observed when the fenamiphos plus naringenin treated group was compared with the fenamiphos treated group. While a statistically significant decrease was observed in acetylcholine esterase when the control group was compared with the fenamiphos treated group, a statistically significant increase was observed when the fenamiphos plus naringenin treated group was compared with the fenamiphos treated group. Histopathologically, villus degeneration (rupture, shedding and aggregation) on the intestinal tissue, separation and necrosis in the basal lamina were observed in the fenamiphos-treated group. In conclusion, naringenin reduced the toxicity of fenamiphos in the small intestine tissues of rats.
