Abstract:

Designed as a prospective descriptive study, this study was conducted to determine the needs of the parents whose children were diagnosed with brain tumors, for the first time, to be operated on the Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery of Gazi University Health Research and Implementation Center, Brain and Neurosurgery Department. Data was collected with "Parent and Child Patient Questionnaire," and "Parental Needs Determination Form," developed by the researcher depending on the literature. The Questionnaire was administered once at the beginning of the research. The Parental Need Identification Form was administered by the face-to-face interview method before and after the operation, at discharge and at the postoperative first month by telephone. In the evaluation of the data, descriptive statistics (number, percentage, average) and weighted totals determined by taking the importance of the expressions according to the responses given by the parents were used. The parents stated that they wondered whether the surgery would be useful in the preoperative period. It is the most important need for parents to learn about the care of the child and the circumstances that parents should be careful at the early postoperative period, at the discharge period, and at the first month after the operation. They also stated that they experienced economic hardship during and after the hospitalization and expressed their feelings as "stress", "blame oneself" and "distress". According to the data obtained from the research is suggested that parent education programs should be constituted and implemented and counseling service should be provided for the parents to meet their needs.
