Abstract:

Reducing energy consumption is one of the leading engineering problems. One of the continuous operating mechanical systems is heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. HVAC systems are composed of various components. One of them is the elbows. In this study, the guide vanes are placed in the elbow in order to reduce the pressure losses in the right angle bracket in 7 different sections which are frequently used in ventilation systems. The goal is to quantify the effects of these fins on the flow using one, two or three guiding wings and to contribute to the optimum elbow design. Using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program, Ansys Fluent, the effects of the guiding fins on flow in the determined positions were investigated. For all sections, the channel lengths in which the flow is fully developed hydrodynamically were calculated and the values solved in the program were read as input data to the cantilever section. Air is used as the work fluid and k- ω, turbulence model is used to obtain the solution under turbulent conditions. The results are presented as graphs of velocity vectors, velocity and pressure distributions.
