Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the students and schools variables on 7th grade student SBS-math achievement and to compare the school ranks by calculating school value added. The population comprise of the sixth grade students in 2008-2009 school year and the seventh grade students in 2009-2010 school year in Ankara. The sample was chosen by using multistage cluster sampling. In this study the data contain 3733 students' math score from 40 schools in Ankara. When the sampling was chosen, it was take into account the fact that all of the students spent two executive school year at the same school. Since student and school variables that affect students' math achievement and school value added were examined, casual comparison model was utilized as a study method. Two-level hierarchical linear model for the determination of variables that affect students' math achievement and random coefficient model for the calculation of school value added was used. The dependent variable in the study was 7th grade student SBS-Math raw score. In students level gender, 6th and 7th grade absence and school math average and 6th grade SBS-Math raw score and in school level school size and school type variables were included study as independent variables. As a result of the analysis, in students level gender, 6th and 7th school math average and 6th grade SBS-Math raw score and in school level school type variables have statistically significant effect on students' SBS-Math achievements in seventh grade. Finally, it has been found that school ranks which were done by using value added model (random effect model) and the difference between students' raw score in 6th and 7th grade are not related.
