Abstract:

The main aim of this research is to investigate the impact of the drama based effective

communications education on the communication skills of 9th grade vocational education

center students. This research was carried out with a pretest-final test experimental design

with a control group. In order to determine the experimental group, the homologous

sampling technique of purposive sampling methods was used. In this context, 52 9th grade

vocational education center students took part in this research. However, due to

absenteeism of certain students and some transferring to other schools, this research was

concluded with 48 students, 24 from the experimental group and 24 from the control

group. For this research, “General Information Form”, “Communication Skills Assessment

Scale (CSAS)”, and “Drama-Based Effective Communications Program in Education”

were used as data collecting tools. After the pretests, the prepared curricula for the

experimental group was administered by the researcher twice a week between for a 12

week period, totaling a number of 24 times. When administering the education program to

the experimental group, the students in the control group were going over their routine

education programs with their teachers. After the 12 week period, the Communication

Skills Assessment Scale (CSAS) was applied to the experimental and control groups as a

final test. Three weeks after the final tests, in order to find out if the given training was

permanent, the 24 students of the experimental group were given the CSAS once again by

the researcher. The data obtained via the General Information Form and the CSAS were

analyzed by using the suitable computerized data analysis program SPSS 23. The results

proved that the data obtained from pretests and final tests show normal distribution while

permanency test does not show normal distribution. Therefore, we used repeated (paired)

sampling t-test of the parametric tests to find out whether students from both experimental

and control groups show any difference referring to their pretest and final test total points.

In the same vein, we used independent sampling t test to analyze whether there are

differences between pretest and final test total points of the control and experimental

groups. The Wilcoxon signed test of nonparametric statistical techniques was used to

analyze the difference between the final test and permanency points of the experimental

group. The findings make it clear that the drama based effective communications program

in education has a positive and permanent effect on the development of students' skills.

Depending on the results of this research, trainers can prepare and apply educational

programs based on drama methods in education in order to improve the communication

skills of the students who need support in terms of communication skills at all levels of

education.
