Abstract:
In this study, it is aimed to examine the national and universal cultural elements of the texts in the Turkish and Turkish Culture textbooks written by the Ministry of National Education for Turkish children living abroad in 2019-2020. For this purpose, it has been determined which cultural elements and how often the texts and activities included in the content of each book at 8 different levels are included. The cultural and universal elements that should be in a book were determined by the field experts, and then it was determined how many of these elements were included and how often. The scope of this study, which is based on the relationship between language and culture, consists of the texts and activities in the Turkish and Turkish Culture textbooks that were started to be taught in 2019-2020. In the research, all texts and activities in Turkish and Turkish Culture textbooks at eight levels were evaluated. The cultural elements in the texts and activities in the textbooks prepared for the Turkish and Turkish Culture course, which form the basis of the research, were determined by content analysis. As a result of this study, in the texts and activities in the examined textbooks, cultural elements related to customs, art, vocabulary, clothing, food, religion, history, homeland, Turkey's geography, national institutions and organizations and universal values are included. It has been determined that the relevant cultural elements about traditional Turkish sports are not included. Suggestions were made regarding the frequency of cultural elements and the inclusion of cultural elements that were not mentioned in the content, and suggestions were made for the creation/writing phase of the materials to be prepared from now on.
