Abstract:

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are the major cause of non-odontogenic pain in the orofacial region and a subdivision of musculo-skeletal disorders. Myofascial pain accounts more than half of temporomandibular disorders. Myofascial pain that may present either acute or chronic is a local-regional muscular pain caused by taut band(s) in muscle or fascia, called trigger points. Parafunctional habits and psychosocial factors like stress are listed in its etiology. Today, due to the tough living conditions, number of patients suffering myofascial pain is increasing. Several coping strategies are used to eliminate or reduce the detrimental effects of conditions leading stress. TMDs may have an adverse effect on quality of life like other systemic diseases. Determining the coping strategies related with TMDs is of utmost importance to avoid the progress of disorder to chronic state and to put forward treatment goals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the socio-demographic characteristics, severity of pain, coping strategies and quality of life in patients with myofascial pain of temporomandibular disorders and also to evaluate the relationship between those factors. Total of 100 patients diagnosed with myofascial pain of TMD were included in this study. A three-part questionnaire was used for evaluation of socio-demographic characteristics, coping strategies and quality of life of patients. The first part of the questionnaire consisted of questions to evaluate socio-demographic characteristics of patients and visual analogue scale to measure severity of pain, the second part consisted of OHIP- 14 questionnaire to evaluate quality of life, third part consisted of COPE scale to evaluate coping strategies of patients. Parametric and non-parametric tests are used for statistical evaluation of the collected data and the significance level was determined as p<0,05.The results of our study showed a significant relation between genders, age, level of education, duration of pain complaint, severity of pain and coping strategies as well as quality of life. We concluded that assisting the patients with myofascial pain of temporomandibular disorders to acquire active coping skills may help them to cope with pain and stress and also to improve their quality of life.
