Manufacture of metal structures and their metallic parts started to rapidly grow and develop as industrialization accelerated throughout the world. Accordingly, the effect on environment of the structures and parts of structures as considered light industry also increased. In the present study, characterization of wastewater discharged during the manufacturing of metal structures and parts of structures was obtained and it was aimed to treat the wastewater by chemical precipitation. A facility manufacturing metal structures and their parts with a daily wastewater discharge of 3 cubic meter was selected as a pilot study location. Current wastewater properties were investigated pursuant to the regional sewage discharge standards and critical parameters. Lime, iron (III) chloride, and cationic polyelectrolyte were used as coagulants during the chemical precipitation process. Appropriate coagulant doses were determined upon the literature. After the coagulants were added to the batch reactor, they were rapidly mixed and then mixing process was decelerated for enabling flock formation, upon which they were left in the tank for 20 min. The disposal efficiency of the system was determined upon monthly analysis of contaminating concentrations of intake and exit water. As a result of a 5-month observation period, the following disposal rates were achieved: SS, 90,1%; COD, 72%; total Fe, 80,4%; total Cr, 99,6%; Zn, 86,6%; and oil-grease, 80,4%. Findings suggested that the chemical precipitation process could be employed as a preliminary treatment process for before the wastewater was discharged into sewage system. Science
