Abstract:

The use of dental implants is currently an efficient, reliable method for treatment of patients affected by partial or total edentulism. But the posterior maxilla has always been a high-risk area for rehabilitation with implant supported fixed prostheses because of atrophic alveolar ridges and/or a highly pneumatized maxillary sinus conditions that imply a limited amount of residual bone; and the task becomes even more difficult. In recent years there has been a growing diffusion of maxillary sinus elevation procedures associated with implantology. This is also testified by growing number of scientific papers published on this matter, making this procedure a necessary technique in the treatment of atrophic jawbones. On the other hand sinus floor elevation procedures have a lot of contraindications such as; maxillary sinus pathology, anxiety, systemic diseases. Also there are alternative treatment methods for sinus floor elevation which are less traumatic and cheaper for the patient. These methods can reduce the healing period. Thus in the present study sinus floor elevation procedure and its alternative treatment methods have been compared by using finite element analaysis method and the results are discussed.
