Abstract:Design of a warehouse is a process which begins with the functional definition and continues with the selection of equipment and determination of layout plan. In each step of this process, performance criteria (costs, amount of raw materials, warehouse capacity, duration of reply) needed to achieve the ultimate purpose should be taken into account. In this study, the main structure of the design of a warehouse is examined by analyzing the topics related to warehouse characteristics, storage systems, classification of warehouses and stock layout policies. Warehouse system of MIKES Microwave Electronic Systems Inc. is observed and problems encountered in the design and the sub-systems of the warehouse are analyzed. Firstly, the equipment in the warehouse is classified by using multi-criteria ABC classification method which facilitates tracking and efficient control of stocks. Moreover, to improve the effectiveness of shuttle system and to decrease the duration needed for the collection of orders, problems related to shelf space allocation are solved on the basis of a heuristic method.
