Abstract:Students studying in Music Teaching programs do take compulsory piano education in the context of instrument training. Students study the musical pieces which have been previously determined by the piano group formed by piano teachers and which are at a level that their class and semester do require. However, during this process which progresses in a very fragile and systematic manner for both students and teachers, some unexpected situations may arise and students might be subject to physical ailments in their hands or arms. For the students not to become distant from piano courses, not to get damaged by having to prolong their education and for them not to stay away from their instruments due to similar problems that their present music teachers might face, examining the usability of single hand piano pieces has formed the problem status of this study. In studies conducted in Turkey, no work has been found in the piano literature used in music teaching programs devoted to the usability of single hand piano pieces. Thus, the general objective of the conducted study is to examine the usability of single hand pieces in piano courses of music departments. Accordingly, with the objective to prepare the single hand repertory and take the opinions of students and faculty members, quantitative and qualitative mixed models have been used in the study. In the qualitative dimension of the study, a survey has been conducted with the aim of taking the opinions of university students studying in music teaching programs about single hand piano repertory, and the opinions of students have been determined with the screening method which is one of the qualitative study methods. In addition to the identification of the opinions of students studying in music teaching programs as to the single hand piano repertory, it has also been targeted to determine whether or not those opinions show a meaningful difference according to the sex, class level, and main instrument of students as well as according to the type of high school they have graduated from. In this context, in the quantitative dimension of the study, the dependent variable has been the opinions of students as to single hand piano repertory while the independent variables have been the sex of students, their class level, their main instrument and the type of high school they have graduated from. In the qualitative dimension of the study, the opinions of faculty members working in the music teaching programs of universities have been examined as to the single hand piano repertory established for the course of piano in the music teaching program. The study is a case study example of qualitative research design. The target population of the study is formed of 2nd, 3rd and 4th class students continuing to music teaching programs in Central Anatolian universities. As a result of the survey conducted in order to determine the opinions related to the usability of single hand piano pieces, it has been determined that students participating in the study had generally exhibited a positive participation. While it has been established that the opinions of students concerning the usability of single hand pieces did not present a meaningful difference according to their sex, class level and the type of school they had graduated from; it has been determined that those opinions presented a meaningful difference as to the type of their main instrument. It has been determined that while students having for main instrument "bağlama" (instrument with three double strings) had shown the highest participation related to the usability of single hand piano pieces; students having for main instrument the piano had shown the lowest participation. Study, exercise and piece have been the three types of repertory that have been prepared in order to enable the use of single hand piano repertory in music education. First the opinions of two faculty members have been taken for the repertory that has been prepared. Then, in order to determine whether or not the prepared repertory could measure the necessary skills of students in the piano course of the music teaching program, an expert group composed of three faculty members has been established. The repertories have been examined by the group of experts with a control list where the repertory evaluation criteria take place. The data obtained as a result of the examination made by experts have been calculated by using descriptive statistical methods and the results have been tabulated and interpreted.
