Curriculum Development Related to Teaching Turkish for Specific Purposes for the Foreigners in Higher Education in Turkey: A Model Suggestion

Abstract:

The purpose of this study to develop a teaching Turkish for specific purposes curriculum for the foreign students who will study at the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences at Uşak University. It is thought that this curriculum would be helpful for the foreign students to overcome language problems that they will encounter in target situations. For determining the language lacks and needs of the foreign students at the faculty; the present situation analysis survey were applied to fifty eight students, and an interview was taken to ten students among them and also a form for students' needs and the content were applied to five of faculty members. Goals and objectives in order to meet students' needs were decided based on data related to the foreigner students' needs and in order to meet these needs, the goals and objectives related to the data taken for this study were obtained. These goals and objectives consist of the four skills on reading, listening, writing and speaking which foreign students need to develop. In addition, the content goals were determined related to this subject area. Source books as additional books determining according to the data from a form for their needs and the content were analyzed and a First 1000 Words List was created consisting of subject area words, phrases and terms which are most frequently used in these books. In the light of the data obtained from the form for their needs and content and from this word list the texts analyzing from the source books reflecting the main content of the subject area were chosen. Curriculum content was prepared in modules and activities were designed using the selected texts. The instructions were given for how to carry the related activities in the curriculum. A table of specifications was prepared representing the usage of curriculum objectives in modules and the questions for the subject area assessment were added to the end of each module by using this table of specifications. As a conclusion, the attained results related to this desinged curriculum were stated and also a number of determinations and suggestions were given about Turkish for specific purposes field.
