Abstract:Mixing of polymers is a simple technique for improving of pure polymer's properties to obtain new material which has several excellent qualities. A petroleum-based polymer is mixed with a biodegradable polymer which can degrade easily. In this study, mixing petroleum-based low density polyethylene (LDPE) with biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) is used as polymer matrix phase. Thus, it was aimed that to obtain composite material with plant flexibility and improved flame resistance properties via addition of flame retardancy additive to mixing of LDPE/PLA polymer matrix. Tincal (T), anhydrous borax (AB), borax pentahydrate (BP), zinc borate (ZB), aluminum hydroxide (AH), magnesium hydroxide (MH), melamine (MLM), ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and pentaerythritol (PER) were used as reinforcement material. The composite materials which were gotten from twin screw extruder like stick. These materials were broken up into small pieces with breaker and then molded with hot press for analyses. The results for the composite materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), limiting oxygen index (LOI), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), mechanical test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses. The chemical structures of the composite materials were tested with FTIR spectroscopy. The materials used in experimental studies which had characteristic peaks revealed in FTIR analyses. The LOI analysis showed that the property of flame retardancy was improved when 20 units of flame retardant were added to per hundred polymer matrix but this amount was not enough. While value of the LOI for sample C (LDPE80/PLA20) was 20.7, for sample Q (LDPE80/PLA20/APP30/PER15/MLM15/ZB3) it was improved 40.4. Tensile strength values of sample C (LDPE80/PLA20) decreased with the addition of flame retardant materials. The TGA analysis results showed initial and final decomposition temperatures 330.79 oC and 475.52 oC for sample C, respectively. As value of the initial and final decomposition temperatures of material increase, thermal stability inreases, too. Therefore, the best thermal stability was seen in Z (LDPE80/PLA20/APP30/PER15/MLM15) which included intumescent flame retardancy (APP – PER – MLM) system. Initial decomposition temperature and final decomposition temperatures were 235.96 oC and 485.00 oC, respectively, for Z (LDPE80/PLA20/APP30/PER15/MLM15) composite material. Also, investigated of surface morphology from SEM images it was concluded that homogeneous dispersion for sample C (LDPE80/PLA20) and Z (LDPE80/PLA20/APP30/PER15/MLM15), Q (LDPE80/PLA20/APP30/PER15/MLM15/ZB3), X (LDPE80/PLA20/APP20/PER10/MLM10/ZB3) composite materials which have the best results of LOI are successful.
